All throughout the Bible, we see that the heart of God always reaching out to the poor and the needy. He would never despised them, He would never ignore them. He paid special attention to them because they are important to Him.
On January 15 this year, I learned from a Straits Times article that 300 million people in China are living in poverty. These are people who know what hunger pangs feel like, these are people whose preoccupation is where they can find their next meal. All other earthly ambitions are put on hold as their basic needs are not even met.
A couple of years ago, I was in a provision shop in a third world country. Someone dropped into the store and bought a can of food. It was tomato sauce with processed fats. That can of food was what that person was able to afford. There is no nutritional value in it. On the contrary, the fats would ultimately clog up the arteries. Many of us who live in more affluent countries may not comprehend the hardship the poor has to face daily.
As we are in the Lunar New Year period here in Singapore, the government as well as non government bodies seized this opportunity to help the poor and needy. It was heartening to learn that some needy elderly residents were presented with items and food stuff. One such item was abalone. Not many people get to eat such rich food, but it warms my heart that we care to give the best to people who truly deserve the best.
