We Cannot Live Without Him

Our time alone with the Lord each morning is not merely a time of centering our hearts upon the Lord. It is an act of love and devotion.

We cannot live without Him. Without seeking the face of the Lord, we are incapable to move into the day. In Him we live and move and have our being.

He is the reason why we rise with hope and strength each day. He is the reason why we sing. He is our life and inspiration.

God works through our vulnerability and frailty. He brings wholeness, restoration and hope. As we surrender the broken pieces of my lives to Him, He makes all things beautiful.

There is nothing more important than pouring and abandoning my life into His hands. He gives me beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning. He gives us undying hope.

We rise with expectancy and great joy each day. Thank God for another day to taste His goodness and His grace.

My Late Father

Cancer took away my late father last September. He died at the age of 75. Last August, my family and I were devastated when we knew that his cancer had spread from his liver to many parts of his body. The doctor gave him six to nine months to live but he only lasted for a month. I witnessed the most heart wrenching and painful experience seeing the disease eating away his life as he laid on his bed. Monte and I were thankful that he allowed us to pray with him on several occasions.
A pastor friend got one his Hainanese pastor called Pastor Foo to visit my father. My father was so open to the good news. He was so sick and weak and yet he kept asking Pastor Foo to tell him more. He could have sat up in the living room sofa for about an hour and that was amazing considering his physical state. Pastor Foo asked if he wanted to accept Christ, my father nodded his head. While all this was happening, my aunt and her daughter came by to visit and they proceeded to speak to my mother in the kitchen. My father was hungry for the message and the word and he did not excuse himself to entertain my relatives. The presence of God had held him there that afternoon. I witnessed a miracle that I will never ever forget.
My father was a good man. He was a sailor in his younger days. Later on, he ran an officer's mess at a bank for many years. He sold beverages, sandwiches and meals to the bank staff and officers. He proceeded to drive a taxi when he had to give up the officer's mess business. He drove the taxi for many years thereafter. He was happier because he loved interacting with the passengers.
My father was a great father. He loved my two brothers and I so much. He worked hard, sacrificed and gave the best to us. Though we were not rich, we never had any lack. I can still remember the smell and taste of cranberry juice, banana milk, garlic pills and Dutch chocolate milk when I was young. I even had tuition classes when it was not the norm in the early days. One day, my father asked if I wanted to learn the piano. I regret not taking up his offer then. That was my father, he never stopped giving. That was how he showed he loved my mother, my brothers and me.
My mother is not physically strong and healthy. My father helped with household chores, he did the marketing. He even bought my mother's clothing.
My father left a great legacy. He gave and he led by example. I am a recipient of his sacrificial love. Last month, my younger brother, Edwin, blessed us with a new fan as the old one broke down sometime ago. Not long ago, he also sent the plumber to settle my faulty flushing system in both my bathrooms. In September, my older brother, Nicholas, bought us a TV. The amazing thing is that he did not know that our old TV was on the verge of breaking down. We thank God for loving family members who care and share. I know that my late father had taught us well.
When Monte and I were courting, we had an uphill challenge. My father asked if I could marry a Chinese man instead. God is so good. To cut the long story short, my father gave his blessing for us to marry. He not only accepted Monte as a son-in-law, He loved and cared for him like his own son. He blessed us beyond our imagination.
As I share about my late father, my heart wells up with much appreciation and gratitude because God had blessed me with a wonderful father. He left us a great legacy. A legacy of love and sacrifice.

Eternity in our Hearts

You put eternity in our hearts
We radiate with Your joy

You put eternity in our hearts
We find comfort and hope in You

You put eternity in our hearts
We embrace Your purposes

In You We live
And move
And have our being in You
You put eternity in our hearts

We cry out to You our maker
Our Redeemer
Our Saviour
Our only hope

Thank you, Lord
For putting eternity in our hearts

Clinging on to the Lord

Yesterday, Monte and I were at the Singapore General Hospital to have Monte's cast removed. Wearing the cast since 21 Apr is not a small feat.  Through this situation, we experience the grace and mercy of God in a deeper dimension.  His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
Lamenting and asking why this had to happen is not the point, the most important thing is seeing and experiencing the Lord in whatever circumstance or predicament we may find ourselves in. We know our vulnerability but we also know that God is our help in times of need.  He comes through for us when we cling to Him and cry out for His divine intervention.  We learn to lean on Him and allow Him to carry us through the rocky mountains and the raging sea.  We can only declare that He is faithful till the very end.

Humble Neha

The Strait's Times yesterday featured Neha Ramu from London who scored the maximum 162 in a test for Mensa, the world's oldest high-IQ society. Her IQ surpassed Professor Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and even Albert Einstein. Her modest reaction is amazing. She said: "Stephen Hawing, Albert Einstein, they've achieved so much... It's not right to compare me to them just because of my IQ. If I don't put in my effort and make use of my IQ, then there's no point in having it."

Not surprisingly, her parents, British eye specialists Jayashree and Muniraju Ramu were also extremely low-key. They did not blow the horn or any trumpet to publicize Nehu's amazing achievement although they were happy. It was reported that "they didn't celebrate with a party or a series of loud, joyous phone calls to everyone in the family's contact list."

I believe Neha will go very far in life because she has good attitudes and values. True humility is never self serving. It will not be eager to outshine or flaunt its strength and ability. When we walk in humility, we not only grow and develop internally, others will also partake of our success and achievement. Humility opens doors for us to be an impact and influence to touch lives.

The Lord's Drawing

The time we spent looking out at the beautiful sea last Thursday night was simply magical. The sound of the sweeping waves soothed us. The gentle and refreshing breeze nourished us. We soaked in every minute of our time as we laid on the beach. We gazed in the beautiful night sky doing nothing but allowing God's amazing creation to sweep us away.

Gratitude

Lovely Eliska
Adorable Eliska
Mum and Eliska

God is so good to us.  The lyrics of a song came to me this morning.

I WAS MADE TO PRAISE YOU

I was made to praise You
I was made to glorify Your Name
In every circumstance to find a
Chance to thank You
I was made to love You
I was made to worship at Your feet
And to obey You Lord
I was made for You

I will always praise You
I will always glorify Your Name
In every circumstance I’ll find a
Chance to thank You
I will always love You
I will always worship at Your feet
And I’ll obey You Lord
I was made for You
We love the Lord and we will find every circumstance to thank Him.  Our breath, our life, our energy and everything we possess come from our maker, sustainer and redeemer.

One of the things that I thank God for is Eliska.  My elder brother is single, Monte and I are childless.  My brother, Edwin and his wife, Soko, had Eliska on 9 Nov 2011.  She is our link to the generation.  When Eliska came into this world, my late father and mother were in their 70's.  They were elated to see their precious granddaughter.  We are full of gratitude for the abundant blessing to our family.  God is so good.

Transformational Leadership

"When you make others successful, you become all the more successful yourself. It means you have the ability to bring the best out in people and that leadership trait is very well-prized."

Vincent Chin of Boston Consulting Group chief, June 2, 2013, The Strait's Times

Foot Washing Touches Hearts

The Chinese evening paper Lian He Wan Bao on 3rd June 2013 featured a heart-warming event which happened on 2nd June. 1500 people in Singapore participated in a Parent's day foot washing event in Singapore. I believe there was not a dry eye when children washed their parent's feet as a sign of love and filial piety.

Persevering Love

We journey through life and savour the bitter and the sweet, the highs and the lows, the exhilarating and the mundane but one thing that sets someone apart is a person who leans on the arms of God moment by moment. We are incapable to bear everything and the Lord pours His grace on us. The pain and struggles seem unbearable at times but the Lord never forsakes us. He leads us through every step. He has gone though pain and He tells us that He carries us through our dark days and moments.

When we posture our hearts, soul, mind on our loving God, His perspectives and wisdom clear our clouded vision, and gives us direction. He gives us purpose to continue the journey. How can we ever live without Him? No, not a second, the only reason why our hearts are beating is because of His great mercy and grace. When we entrust our whole life to our Redeemer, He makes all things beautiful. He picks up the broken pieces and brings us life and wholeness. Those who persevere to the end will receive the crown of life.

The Balm of Gilead

In mid March 2013, I discovered a lump at the base of my neck near the collar bone. It was hard and it did not look good.

I went to the doctor and the ultrasound showed a nodule measuring about 2 cm in diameter. In the meantime, blood tests were done and I was scheduled to see the specialist in the Singapore General Hospital at a later date.

It was tough for me because of the heavy use of my voice in vocal and enrichment training. At times, I had difficulty projecting my voice. When I yawn, it was hurting too.

I had difficulty singing and praying. Oftensomes, Monte had to be ready to take over in the middle of prayer. God is merciful.

Monte and I continued to pray for the Lord's healing and grace.

One day, I discovered to my amazement that the lump was gone. Monte and I were elated. We cannot understand why and where it had gone.

All we know was that God had come through for us. The Lord healed me. Jesus is the balm of Gilead.

God performs mighty miracles. His healing power flows through our broken bodies. The balm of Gilead cruises through our broken bodies.

Lord, have mercy on us! Empower and strengthen us to believe You for a miracle. The Lord inspires faith in our hearts to see the miraculous.

Stranger's Kindness

On 21 April, Monte and I were traveling on a travelator on our way into Sentosa.  Monte fell and had a hairline fracture of his right knee.  The doctor at Singapore General Hospital said that it might take 10-12 weeks to heal.  He had to wear a cast from his upper thigh to his ankle.

Today, he is still wearing a cast.  It will be removed on 10 June 2013.  During this time, we are thankful to experience the kindness of people.  Total strangers help in different ways.  People extend their helping hands.  Their warmth, kindness and generosity touched us deeply.

We Extol Your Matchless Name

There is a lovely blue tinge in the sky this morning. It is mesmerising. It is a glorious sight to behold.

The Lord fills our hearts, minds and soul with His greatness and wonder. The indescribable beauty is magnified when we behold the Lord. His splendour and glory flood our hearts. The bigness, vastness and greatness of our loving God envelop us.

The Lord brings clarity and perspective to our lives and circumstances. He brings us inspiring hope. He brings joy and restoration. He fills our mouths with laughter.

We need Him more with each passing moment. We bow down in humble adoration and extol His matchless name. Show us Your glory. Show us Your power. We worship You almighty God.

Bringing the Plants Back to Life

Over time, Monte picked up some discarded plants in our neighbourhood.  Most  of the plants were in a terrible state when he first brought them home.  With some tender loving care, they come alive to add some colours to our life.

How Great is Our God

Tonight, my heart is so full with the goodness of the Lord. Monte's participation in the Society of Pentecostal Studies conference last year in Virginia, USA and this year at Seattle, USA is testament to the divine providence of God. The Lord opened the door of Ministry but we lack the funds for Monte to go. God miraculously provided the needed finances to show us that He has all the resources in His hands.

Monte went and came back to Singapore full of the things that God had placed in His heart and Spirit. The work of God in us cannot be purchased by money. It is not the earthly success that the world thinks of. It is the work of God's Spirit. It is the work of His power.  It is so precious and priceless because God gives His best to us.

All we can say is that we can never ever out do and out give Him. He stretches our faith to believe for the impossible. We are mindful of the smallness of our strength, our limitations and inadequacies. But the Lord overlooks all these. He zeroes into the depth of our being and shows us His heart. He unfolds His plans and purposes to us when we seek His face.  He opened our eyes to see that all things are possible for Him.

Our 14th Wedding Anniversary

Today marks the 14th year of our marriage.  I thank God for these years that He has led us through a wonderful journey filled with His grace, strength, hope, joy, peace and countless blessings which God has freely lavished on us. We stand amazed at His greatness and goodness.  He opened our eyes to see miracles and our hearts leap with joy when we see Him in His glory, splendour and grace.

I thank God for Monte who has given me the best years of my life.  We are reminded that it is God who put two different persons with different upbringing, character, values, personality together.  It is not because we are a perfect match for each other.  The only reason two hearts melted into one is because of the Lord's love and presence in us.  He gels us together.  He cements us together.  He super-glued us together with His great love.

We are thankful for each day that God has blessed us.  We seize every moment to experience the greatness, boundlessness and bigness of our loving God who is faithful and true.  We allow the Lord to do a deep and lasting work in our life in Him.  In Christ alone, we put our trust.

Amazing God

Monte posted the following posted the early hours today:

"Brothers and sisters, I am at the airport now and will fly off to the USA for about ten days. First stop is Seattle WA where later in the week I will attend the Society for Pentecostal Studies meeting to deliver a paper on, in layman terms, spiritual and life formation.

My thanks especially to a number of Beloved friends in Christ who provided in my behalf to make this trip possible. To both you and many others who remember me in prayer, again, your treasured prayer for God's angelic oversight is appreciated during this trip. I will keep you informed (Phil. 4:10-13, 19, 23).

Remember my dearest wife Jee Fong Tan-Rice, of whom I will be separate from during our wedding anniversary (20 March). My family will fly me down to Fresno, California to visit them for a few days, and then I will return to Seattle for the flight back to Singapore on 29 March."

As I read what Monte had posted, my heart well up with gratitude to the Lord. He opened the door for Monte to present the paper at the SPS conference and provided the resources to meet every need. Monte and I have experienced the Lord in an awesome dimension that we have never imagine. The Lord is truly awesome and glorious. Our limited vocabulary is insufficient to express our deep appreciation to His work in us. We give thanks to the people who have given financially and prayed for us in this endeavour. We continue to posture our hearts to our loving God and Father who is faithful, wonderful and mighty. God is good all the time.

Gratefulness

Monte and I are thankful for family and friends who have been a part of our lives. Often when we dwell on how people have blessed and enriched us, we can only thank God for this blessing. We desire these relationships to deepen and grow stronger.

We are mindful of the smallness of our strength. We know our vulnerability. But we also know in our hearts that God is sovereign and great. We lack nothing and we put our complete trust in our God who never fails. Our hearts overflow with gratefulness as we live each day in the light of His glory and grace.

Amazing Mickey

My brother's dog, Mickey, is putting up with us for a few years.  Monte and I love him a lot.  He loves to sleep on the mat on my bedroom floor.  A few hours before bedtime, he would already position himself.  He moves the mat as close to our bed as he can.  He's just adorable.

20 Oct 2012 at 8.43am
In the stillness of the morning on 20 Oct last year, I looked out of my window and captured these precious moments. Moments filled with the awesomeness and greatness of our loving God and Father.  I was captivated by God's amazing creation. The heaven and earth declares the glory of the Lord.  In the quietness of that lovely morning, the world seemed to stand still.  My heart flooded with serenity, peace and calmness that one can only find in the presence of God.

Happy Birthday, Monte!

Today is Monte’s birthday.  I am blessed to journey with Monte all these years.  He has been a constant encourager and inspiring husband.  His love and sacrifice has touched me deeply.  I cherish each day that we can journey through life’s sweet and bitter moments, highs and lows, joy and sorrow, hope and despair.  It is a blessing to hold someone’s hand when you know that special someone loves the Lord with all of his heart.  You know that he will do everything he can to follow hard after the heart of God in the most trying circumstances.  I love you, Monte.  Happy birthday!

Amazing Grace

God works through our humanness.  Many a times, we appear to be at the breaking point and another straw would have brought down the tower.  Yet, our amazing God works in moment like this.  These are moments of great vulnerability, anguish, despondency and heartache.  God works through the dark moments of our lives and His light comes flooding through our life and circumstances.  He sings the song of the night through each broken vessel.  Our pain and struggles are the raw materials that He brings about miracles and breakthroughs.  He raised us up as His mighty army and launched us forth to conquer battles that we can never conquer in our own strength.  His grace is sufficient for anyone who clings on to Him dearly.  His hand is never too short to reach us when we call on Him.

The Important Things in Life

On 31 December 2012, the Strait's Times featured a segment on New Year, New Start. Ms Goh Kai Sin, a 31 year old teacher who is expecting her second child has this to say "In a materialistic, face-paced society where people want a big house or car, it's easy to lose focus because of peer pressure. I don't want my children to be so caught up in the rat race that they forget what is important, for example, being near to God, the importance of family ties and being passionate about their interests."

The True Essence of Giving

Last night, the Chinese evening paper featured a rich businessman who donated S$240,000 to the flood victims of the recent tragedy in the Philippines.  What touched my heart is the fact that the businessman remained anonymous.  He showed us the true essence of giving.  He did not need any recognition or acknowledgement. He did not demand for his name to be plastered on the wall of a building or an institution. He gave from his heart.  This is an act of kindness that leaves a lasting impression. The nameless and the faceless truly know the meaning of giving.

Our First Bear Chopstick Rests

This is our first pair of chopstick rests that we bought back in 1999 when we got married. We still have them today! They brought back fond and beautiful memories of Monte and my life together.

Our first attempt in making chicken rice, nasi lemak, beef stew, pasta, chicken curry and many more dishes. God is so good to us.

I am thankful for the blessing of a wonderful husband. We build a life centred in Christ. We allow the Lord to grow and develop us daily. All we ever needed is found in Christ and Christ alone.

We have experienced good and challenging times. We have ascended to the highest height and the deepest valley together. God’s love compels us to persevere in loving and serving God and His people.

All these years, we just marvel at how the Lord leads us. He stretches us in many areas that we continue to aspire to grow and develop. God is merciful.

We cherish each day that God has given to us.  It is not just getting through each day. We see His hand of love. We experience His favour and goodness. His love brings hope, comfort and strength. He spurs us on to trust Him increasingly.

Eliska Turned One on 9 Nov 2012

My niece, Eliska, turned one on 9 November.  Time flies, Eliska has started a few steps.  It so amazing to watch her grow and I cannot help but thank God for the wonderful blessing He has given to our family.

We are Never Alone

We are never alone because God is with us in all and through all.  We may experience moments where our world seems to be falling apart and yet we do not give up because the God of hope upholds us in our pain, agony and anguish.  We may face discouragements and disappointments in life but God’s love and sustaining grace compel us to go yet another mile to love and serve with no reservation.

The love of God compels us to nourish, strengthen and build.  His love spurs us on to run the most important race of our lifetime; a race not marked by human success and accolades.  A race not determined by man’s standard but one that teems with undying devotion and faithfulness to our living God and Father.  When the going gets tough, the Lord pours in added grace and strength to help us to overcome every fiery dart and obstacle.  As we lean on the arms of God, He embraces us in His bosom and comforts us with His abiding presence.

Living in His Promises

Our hearts are full of the goodness of the Lord.  It is bursting at its seams because God has shown us His mercy.  Even with our unanswered questions and things that we cannot fully comprehend and grapple, we do not fall away in dissipation.  For our trust is in our God who never fails or wavers.  Though we do not see, we believe.  We hang on to the promises of God in the face of opposition and bleakness.  God will come through for us.  He orchestrates the circumstances in our lives and leads us to live victoriously for Him.  He stops us in our track and beckons us to focus on Him.  He grants us resilience and strength to persevere when the going gets tough.  He is our only hope.  He is the very reason for our existence.  So we put our trust in God who is ever faithful and true.

Trusting God

On 8 December, Monte made the following post on facebook.

Brothers and Sisters whom I cherish through the fellowship of God's Spirit, what I share here with you, is for the purpose of enlisting your prayer and partnership- as co-labors for the up-building of the Church and testimony of the coming Kingdom, and the greater glory of God.

On 8 August, I received confirmation to deliver another presentation paper at the 21-23 March, 2013 annual meeting for
the Society of Pentecostal Studies (SPS). In keeping with the conference theme on "Holiness," my presentation will be about life-formation. This conference will be held at Seattle Pacific University, Seattle, Washington, USA, in conjunction with the Wesleyan Theological Society.

I will show how centuries of Christian wisdom confirm the Pentecostal way of life-formation through ongoing consecration to God through redemptive, sanctifying and missionally empowering encounters with His Spirit on holy ground. This 21st century Pentecostal model of life-formation shows how the Spirit uses these three processes to script in us, ever-new stories and testimonies of God's faithfulness- that shape our missional witness of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Hence, the presentation title is, "Patterning the Pentecostal Via Salutis to the Classical ‘Three Ways' of Spiritual Formation: An Ecumenical Model for Developmental Sanctification."

WHAT IS LACKING HOWEVER, and what we are praying for is: God's provision is financing airfare, hotel accommodations and other smaller related expenses (food costs).

Blessings to you

Monte

At altars of new beginnings- let us tarry;
For all latter and former rains;
For the upper and lower springs;
For from the Father's right hand,
We receive power-
And prophesy for the healing of all nations.

We are thankful for the positive and encouraging responses so far.  We continue to believe the Lord to provide for our needs.

On 8 August 2012, Monte received word from SPS that his paper was accepted.  We were overflowing with inexpressible joy.  We are thankful that God can minister through what little we have to offer.

In the midst of joy, we are aware of the financial commitment that comes with this venture.  In reality, it is quite daunting to begin with; the air ticket, accommodation, food and miscellaneous expenses.  We know that we are not alone and the Lord has all the resources in His hands.  As the day of the conference draws nearer, the excitement builds up.  Our faith in God is renewed daily.  We continue to lean on His arms of love.  We marvel at His greatness and awesomeness.  We persevere in His love for He is our sole desire.

Miracle Working God

Monte and I are overwhelmed by the goodness of the Lord.  Our first washing machine finally broke down beyond repair sometime between this September and October.  God provided for us miraculously.  A few days ago, we received some unexpected funds to purchase a new washing machine.  It was delivered to us yesterday.

We do not believe that this is merely a coincidence.  We believe in our loving God's providence.  We find every circumstance to thank Him.  He is fully dependable and our limited words cannot fully express the gratitude and appreciation in our hearts.  We continue to put our complete trust in God who has never failed us.  He leads us to streams of living water and opens our eyes to see through His.

Lovely Sunset

A few days ago, Monte and I took time out to pray at Sentosa. We were so glad to catch the tail end of a lovely sunset. We had barbeque chicken, tomatoes an bread for dinner at the beach.

The Inspirational Story of Dr Richard Teo

The \Late Dr Richard Teo
The late Dr Richard Teo, a 40-year-old millionaire and cosmetic surgeon died from stage 4 cancer 18 October 2012.  The following is the transcript of a talk he gave to the D1 class (medical students) on 19 Jan 2012.

“Hi good morning to all of you.  My voice is a bit hoarse, so please bear with me. I thought I'll just introduce myself.  My name is Richard, I'm a medical doctor.  And I thought I'll just share some thoughts of my life.  It's my pleasure to be invited by prof. Hopefully, it can get you thinking about how... as you pursue this.. embarking on your training to become dental surgeons, to think about other things as well.

Since young, I am a typical product of today's society.  Relatively successful product that society requires..  From young, I came from a below average family. I was told by the media... and people around me that happiness is about success. And that success is about being wealthy.  With this mind-set, I've always be extremely competitive, since I was young.

Not only do I need to go to the top school, I need to have success in all fields. Uniform groups, track, everything.  I needed to get trophies, needed to be successful, I needed to have colours award, national colours award, everything. So I was highly competitive since young. I went on to medical school, graduated as a doctor.  Some of you may know that within the medical faculty, ophthalmology is one of the most highly sought after specialities. So I went after that as well.  I was given a traineeship in ophthalmology, I was also given a research scholarship by NUS to develop lasers to treat the eye.

So in the process, I was given 2 patents, one for the medical devices, and another for the lasers.  And you know what, all this academic achievements did not bring me any wealth.  So once I completed my bond with MOH, I decided that this is taking too long, the training in eye surgery is just taking too long. And there's lots of money to be made in the private sector.  If you're aware, in the last few years, there is this rise in aesthetic medicine. Tons of money to be made there. So I decided, well, enough of staying in institution, it's time to leave.  So I quit my training halfway and I went on to set up my aesthetic clinic... in town, together with a day surgery centre.

You know the irony is that people do not make heroes out average GP (general practitioner), family physicians. They don't.  They make heroes out of people who are rich and famous. People who are not happy to pay $20 to see a GP, the same person have no qualms paying ten thousand dollars for a liposuction, 15 thousand dollars for a breast augmentation, and so on and so forth. So it's a no brainer isn't?  Why do you want to be a gp? Become an aesthetic physician. So instead of healing the sick and ill, I decided that I'll become a glorified beautician. So, business was good, very good.  It started off with waiting of one week, then became 3weeks, then one month, then 2 months, then 3 months.  I was overwhelmed; there were just too many patients.  Vanities are fantastic business. I employed one doctor, the second doctor, the 3rd doctor, the 4th doctor.  And within the 1st year, we're already raking in millions. Just the 1st year.  But never is enough because I was so obsessed with it.  I started to expand into Indonesia to get all the rich Indonesian tai-tais who wouldn't blink an eye to have a procedure done.  So life was really good.

So what do I do with the spare cash. How do I spend my weekends? Typically, I'll have car club gatherings. I take out my track car, with spare cash I got myself a track car. We have car club gatherings. We'll go up to Sepang in Malaysia. We'll go for car racing. And it was my life. With other spare cash, what do i do? I get myself a Ferrari. At that time, the 458 wasn't out, it's just a spider convertible, 430. This is a friend of mine, a schoolmate who is a forex trader, a banker. So he got a red one, he was wanting all along a red one, I was getting the silver one.

So what do I do after getting a car?  It's time to buy a house, to build our own bungalows.  So we go around looking for a land to build our own bungalows, we went around hunting. So how do i live my life?  Well, we all think we have to mix around with the rich and famous. This is one of the Miss Universe.  So we hang around with the beautiful, rich and famous. This by the way is an internet founder.  So this is how we spend our lives, with dining and all the restaurants and Michelin Chefs you know.

So I reach a point in life that I got everything for my life. I was at the pinnacle of my career and all. That's me one year ago in the gym and I thought I was like, having everything under control and reaching the pinnacle.

Well, I was wrong.  I didn't have everything under control.  About last year March, I started to develop backache in the middle of nowhere. I thought maybe it was all the heavy squats I was doing.  So I went to SGH, saw my classmate to do an MRI, to make sure it's not a slipped disc or anything. And that evening, he called me up and said that we found bone marrow replacement in your spine. I said, sorry what does that mean?  I mean I know what it means, but I couldn't accept that. I was like “Are you serious?” I was still running around going to the gym you know. But we had more scans the next day, PET scans - positrons emission scans, they found that actually I have stage 4 terminal lung cancer.  I was like "Whoa where did that come from?” It has already spread to the brain, the spine, the liver and the adrenals. And you know one moment I was there, totally thinking that I have everything under control, thinking that I've reached the pinnacle of my life.  But the next moment, I have just lost it.

This is a CT scan of the lungs itself.  If you look at it, every single dot there is a tumour. We call this miliaries tumour.  And in fact, I have tens of thousands of them in the lungs.  So, I was told that even with chemotherapy, that I'll have about 3-4months at most. Did my life come crushing on, of course it did, who wouldn't?  I went into depression, of course, severe depression and I thought I had everything.

See the irony is that all these things that I have, the success, the trophies, my cars, my house and all. I thought that brought me happiness.  But i was feeling really down, having severe depression. Having all these thoughts of my possessions, they brought me no joy.  The thought of You know, I can hug my Ferrari to sleep, no...No, it is not going to happen. It brought not a single comfort during my last ten months.  And I thought they were, but they were not true happiness.  But it wasn't.  What really brought me joy in the last ten months was interaction with people, my loved ones, friends, people who genuinely care about me, they laugh and cry with me, and they are able to identify the pain and suffering I was going through. That brought joy to me, happiness. None of the things I have, all the possessions, and I thought those were supposed to bring me happiness. But it didn't, because if it did, I would have felt happy think about it, when I was feeling most down..

You know the classical Chinese New Year that is coming up. In the past, what do I do?  Well, I will usually drive my flashy car to do my rounds, visit my relatives, to show it off to my friends. And I thought that was joy, you know.  I thought that was really joy.  But do you really think that my relatives and friends, whom some of them have difficulty trying to make ends meet, that will truly share the joy with me?  Seeing me driving my flashy car and showing off to them?  No, no way. They won’t be sharing joy with me.  They were having problems trying to make ends meet, taking public transport.  In fact i think, what I have done is more like you know, making them envious, jealous of all I have.  In fact, sometimes even hatred.

Those are what we call objects of envy.  I have them, I show them off to them and I feel it can fill my own pride and ego. That didn't bring any joy to these people, to my friends and relatives, and I thought they were real joy.

Well, let me just share another story with you.  You know when I was about your age, I stayed in king Edward VII hall.  I had this friend whom I thought was strange. Her name is Jennifer, we're still good friends.  And as I walk along the path, she would, if she sees a snail, she would actually pick up the snail and put it along the grass patch. I was like why do you need to do that?  Why dirty your hands?  It’s just a snail.  The truth is she could feel for the snail. The thought of being crushed to death is real to her, but to me it's just a snail.  If you can't get out of the pathway of humans then you deserve to be crushed, it’s part of evolution isn't it? What an irony isn't it?

There I was being trained as a doctor, to be compassionate, to be able to empathise; but I couldn't.  As a house officer, I graduated from medical school, posted to the oncology department at NUH.  And, every day, every other day I witness death in the cancer department.  When I see how they suffered, I see all the pain they went through. I see all the morphine they have to press every few minutes just to relieve their pain.  I see them struggling with their oxygen breathing their last breath and all. But it was just a job.  When I went to clinic every day, to the wards every day, take blood, give the medication but was the patient real to me?  They weren't real to me. It was just a job, I do it, I get out of the ward, I can't wait to get home, I do my own stuff.

Was the pain, was the suffering the patients went through real?  No. Of course I know all the medical terms to describe how they feel, all the suffering they went through.  But in truth, I did not know how they feel, not until I became a patient. It is until now; I truly understand how they feel. And, if you ask me, would I have been a very different doctor if I were to re-live my life now, I can tell you yes I will. Because I truly understand how the patients feel now.  And sometimes, you have to learn it the hard way.

Even as you start just your first year, and you embark this journey to become dental surgeons, let me just challenge you on two fronts.

Inevitably, all of you here will start to go into private practice.  You will start to accumulate wealth.  I can guarantee you. Just doing an implant can bring you thousands of dollars, it's fantastic money.  And actually there is nothing wrong with being successful, with being rich or wealthy, absolutely nothing wrong.  The only trouble is that a lot of us like myself couldn't handle it.

Why do I say that? Because when I start to accumulate, the more I have, the more I want.  The more I wanted, the more obsessed I became. Like what I showed you earlier on, all I can was basically to get more possessions, to reach the pinnacle of what society did to us, of what society wants us to be.  I became so obsessed that nothing else really mattered to me.  Patients were just a source of income, and I tried to squeeze every single cent out of these patients.

A lot of times we forget, whom we are supposed to be serving.  We become so lost that we serve nobody else but just ourselves.  That was what happened to me.  Whether it is in the medical, the dental fraternity, I can tell you, right now in the private practice, sometimes we just advise patients on treatment that is not indicated. Grey areas.  And even though it is not necessary, we kind of advocate it. Even at this point, I know who are my friends and who genuinely cared for me and who are the ones who try to make money out of me by selling me "hope". We kind of lose our moral compass along the way. Because we just want to make money.

Worse, I can tell you, over the last few years, we bad mouth our fellow colleagues, our fellow competitors in the industry.  We have no qualms about it. So if we can put them down to give ourselves an advantage, we do it. And that's what happening right now, medical, dental everywhere.  My challenge to you is not to lose that moral compass.  I learnt it the hard way,  I hope you don't ever have to do it.

Secondly, a lot of us will start to get numb to our patients as we start to practise. Whether is it government hospitals, private practice, I can tell you when I was in the hospital, with stacks of patient folders, I can't wait to get rid of those folders as soon as possible; I can't wait to get patients out of my consultation room as soon as possible because there is just so many, and that's a reality.  Because it becomes a job, a very routine job.  And this is just part of it. Do I truly know how the patient feels back then? No, I don't. The fears and anxiety and all, do I truly understand what they are going through?  I don't, not until when this happens to me and I think that is one of the biggest flaws in our system.

We’re being trained to be healthcare providers, professional, and all and yet we don't know how exactly they feel.  I'm not asking you to get involved emotionally, I don't think that is professional but do we actually make a real effort to understand their pain and all? Most of us won’t, alright, I can assure you. So don't lose it, my challenge to you is to always be able to put yourself in your patient's shoes.

Because the pain, the anxiety, the fear are very real even though it's not real to you, it's real to them. So don't lose it and you know, right now I'm in the midst of my 5th cycle of my chemotherapy. I can tell you it’s a terrible feeling. Chemotherapy is one of those things that you don't wish even your enemies to go through because it's just suffering, lousy feeling, throwing out, you don't even know if you can retain your meals or not. Terrible feeling! And even with whatever little energy now I have, I try to reach out to other cancer patients because I truly understand what pain and suffering is like. But it's kind of little too late and too little.

You guys have a bright future ahead of you with all the resource and energy, so I’m going to challenge you to go beyond your immediate patients.  To understand that there are people out there who are truly in pain, truly in hardship.  Don’t get the idea that only poor people suffer.  It is not true.  A lot of these poor people do not have much in the first place, they are easily contented. for all you know they are happier than you and me but there are out there, people who are suffering mentally, physically, hardship, emotionally, financially and so on and so forth, and they are real.  We choose to ignore them or we just don't want to know that they exist.

So do think about it alright, even as you go on to become professionals and dental surgeons and all.  That you can reach out to these people who are in need. Whatever you do can make a large difference to them.  I'm now at the receiving end so I know how it feels, someone who genuinely care for you, encourage and all. It makes a lot of difference to me. That’s what happens after treatment. I had a treatment recently, but I’ll leave this for another day.  A lot of things happened along the way, that's why I am still able to talk to you today.

I'll just end of with this quote here, it's from this book called Tuesdays with Morris, and some of you may have read it.  Everyone knows that they are going to die; every one of us knows that.  The truth is, none of us believe it because if we did, we will do things differently. When I faced death, when I had to, I stripped myself off all stuff totally and I focused only on what is essential.  The irony is that a lot of times, only when we learn how to die then we learn how to live. I know it sounds very morbid for this morning but it's the truth, this is what I’m going through.

Don’t let society tell you how to live.  Don’t let the media tell you what you're supposed to do. Those things happened to me. And I led this life thinking that these are going to bring me happiness.  I hope that you will think about it and decide for yourself how you want to live your own life. Not according to what other people tell you to do, and you have to decide whether you want to serve yourself, whether you are going to make a difference in somebody else's life. Because true happiness doesn't come from serving yourself. I thought it was but it didn't turn out that way.  With that I thank you, if you have any questions you have for me, please feel free.  Thank you.”
