Seek the Lord

Seek the Lord and He will be found. He will show us signs and wonders. He will reveal things that will blow our mind. God is earnestly seeking for those who will seek Him with all of their heart. He promised to shower His love and blessings on each of us. He calls us His beloved. We are the apple of His eye, His prized possession. Anyone who says that we are insignificant has missed it all because the Lord is on our side and we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. He empowers us to live each day triumphantly.

Psalm 125:1

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary:
"All those minds shall be truly stayed, that are stayed on God. They shall be as Mount Zion, firm as it is; a mountain supported by providence, much more as a holy mountain supported by promise. They cannot be removed from confidence in God. They abide for ever in that grace which is the earnest of their everlasting continuance in glory. Committing themselves to God, they shall be safe from their enemies. Even mountains may moulder and come to nothing, and rocks be removed, but God's covenant with his people cannot be broken, nor his care of them cease. Their troubles shall last no longer than their strength will bear them up under them. The rod of the wicked may come, may fall upon the righteous, upon their persons, their estates, their liberties, their families names, on any thing that falls to their lot; only it cannot reach their souls. And though it may come upon their lot, it shall not rest thereon. The Lord will make all work together for their good. The wicked shall only prove a correcting rod, not a destroying sword; even this rod shall not remain upon them, lest they distrust the promise, thinking God has cast them off."

Grateful to the Lord

This morning as I look out of my window, my heart is overwhelmed by the goodness of God. I thank God for a loving husband, wonderful family and friends.

I see the smallness of my strength and the greatness of the Lord. I see my weakness made perfect in His strength. God is all powerful, all knowing, great and beyond comparison. No one can ever run out of things to thank Him. 

As a pilgrim on earth, travelling light is easy as long as we lay our life at the altar daily. Giving our life completely to His Lordship. Soaking in His loving kindness and love till His holy presence permeate through every part of our being. Thank you for Your everlasting love, O Lord.

The following is an excerpt on The Privilege of Suffering by Pico Iyer of the New York Times featured in The Straits Times today. Iyer mentioned about the suffering that Kobayashi Issa, an 18th century poet went through "Issa had seen his mother die when he was two, his first son die, his father contract typhoid fever, his next son and a beloved daughter die. ...Issa saw another son die and his own body paralysed. His wife died, giving birth to another child, and that child died, maybe because of a careless nurse. He married again and was separated within weeks. He married a third time and his house was destroyed by a fire. Finally, his third wife bore him a healthy daughter - but Issa himself died, at 64, before he could see the little girl born." 

Like Issa, the Bible tells us that Job also suffered immensely.  Job lost everything.  He lost his children, wealth, property and health.  Even his name was dishonoured.  He fell into utter despair. God in His mercy came through for Job.  He blessed his life bountifully and restored Job completely, far beyond what he originally possessed. 

Coming back to Issa, what Issa went through is unimaginable.  It is amazing how he faced the calamities and tragedy and kept going on. When we look around us, we are no different.  Many of us have gone through tremendous suffering too.  Some of us have lost loved ones, some are battling with crippling diseases and sicknesses.  Others may be experiencing physical pain constantly.  The Lord helps us to make sense of the devastation and difficult circumstances we are in. He helps us to see beyond the temporal pain and agony and gives us hope and perspective in light of the things that are out of our hands.

The only reason why we are able to ride through the suffering and pain in life is because God under girds us with supernatural strength. An ability to cope in our most trying times. Everything may be screaming at us to throw in the towel but God's persevering love does not allow us to give up. He is with us in our pain and suffering. He leads us on to believe Him for yet another miracle. We are blessed because God is with us in the fire. He lifts us up. Yes, love lifted us when we were drowning in the sea of hopelessness and despair. He put eternity in our hearts so that all we can do is to focus on Him and find hope and solace.

Selfless Sacrifice

God uses the weak and the lowly

He uses people who have little to offer

He does not despise their meagre offerings 

He multiplied their fives loaves and two fishes

God sees through the hearts of true givers

People who give not because they have to 

But because they want to

A Caring Heart

Yesterday, The Straits Times featured Mr Patrick Chan, a community volunteer in Taman Jurong.  He has a heart for youth-at-risk.  “He notes that most delinquency cases usually start off innocuously with a bit of smoking, then escalate to sniffing glue and taking drugs.  “The next thing, the kid is stealing bicycle parts, then robbing someone on the street,” he says.  “If you have a kid that drops out in Secondary 1, chances are he’s going to be in jail by the time he’s 20.  In fact, probably going to spend 10 to 20 years in jail for robbery, theft or drugs.”"

Mr Chan wants to see change in the lives of poor kids, he says “What I’d like to see is poor kids having a better chance at making it out of the bottom of society.  There’s always going to be somebody at the bottom but it doesn’t mean that if you’re been there, you’re going to stay there. That’s just wrong.”

Mr Chan is a good role model of selfless service and care for one of the most vulnerable groups of people in Singapore.  He is not just an unpaid volunteer, he is one who strives to make the lives of the needy better; one who truly cared for the down and outs.
