He Takes Our Pain Away

God heals our festering wounds
As the master surgeon sets to work on us
In our pain and agony
He shows us His awesome power
He pours His healing grace
He takes our pain away
So that when we walk in wholeness
All we see is His glory and His grace

Loving Eliska

Little Eliska
So full of joy
You brighten our lives
You put a smile on each face
With each bounce
You bring us delight
Loving you only
Because you are you

Pliable in His Hands

God knows our vulnerability
He knows our weaknesses
He turns our mistakes into stepping stones
He turns our failures into triumph
Nothing we have been through is wasted
God keeps His covenant with us forever
To mould and make us His masterpiece
We are ever pliable and soft in our master's hands

Lord, Have Mercy on Us

Lord, as the world is reeling with
The pain of suffering
The pain of loss
The paralyzing fear of impending war
The heartaches of uncertain future
We cry out to You
Our ever present help in times of need
The deep anchor of our soul
The hope of our glory
The life and light that burn bright and strong
Lord, shower Your mercy on us
Show us a sign of Your goodness
Lead us by the power of Your Spirit
Lord, have mercy on us

Teach Us to Number Our Days

Teach us this day
 To number our days
Just like the earth revolves around the sun
Our life revolves around You
You give us wings to fly
You give us songs in the night
You put a spring in our feet
Though our days are numbered
All we want is You
All we desire is to do Your will
It is all about You
And nothing else
So teach us this day
To number our days

You are full of splendour
You are glorious
We worship You
In spirit and in truth

Fully Dependable

We serve a God who is fully dependable
A God so faithful and true
We place our complete trust in Him
He never fails
He never falters
All who seek Him find Him
All who call on Him are saved
We serve a faithful God
Who never fails

Perfect Liberty

We dance with all our might
We sing with all our heart
For He has turned our mourning into dancing
He has filled our mouths with laughter
We are no longer bound
For the Lord has given us perfect liberty

More of You

We just want more of You
Not the things the world offers
With Your loving embrace
We cling on to You
Knowing that You alone can satisfy us
You alone makes us whole
We just want more of You
So when the world sees us
They see You

You are the Reason for Our Being

You've brought hope in our despair
You've brought joy in our sorrow

To You we consecrate our life

You are Irreplaceable

We feel the gentle nudge of Your love
Love so rich and free
We know the richness of Your grace
Grace so amazing
We see Your hand of love
No one can ever replace You in our life
No rival throne can overtake Your place
On the throne of our heart

A Caring Heart

Yesterday, The Straits Times featured Mr Patrick Chan, a community volunteer in Taman Jurong.  He has a heart for youth-at-risk.  “He notes that most delinquency cases usually start off innocuously with a bit of smoking, then escalate to sniffing glue and taking drugs.  “The next thing, the kid is stealing bicycle parts, then robbing someone on the street,” he says.  “If you have a kid that drops out in Secondary 1, chances are he’s going to be in jail by the time he’s 20.  In fact, probably going to spend 10 to 20 years in jail for robbery, theft or drugs.”"

Mr Chan wants to see change in the lives of poor kids, he says “What I’d like to see is poor kids having a better chance at making it out of the bottom of society.  There’s always going to be somebody at the bottom but it doesn’t mean that if you’re been there, you’re going to stay there. That’s just wrong.”

Mr Chan is a good role model of selfless service and care for one of the most vulnerable groups of people in Singapore.  He is not just an unpaid volunteer, he is one who strives to make the lives of the needy better; one who truly cared for the down and outs.

Drawing Near to the Lord

The deep blue sea beckons me to draw near
My thoughts and meditation begin to clear
God's loving and gentle breeze blow me away
His debt of love who can repay

Who Can Compare with You

The heavens declares Your glory
The angels bow in Your holiness
We sing Your glorious praise
Resounding with joy and hope
Worthy is the lamb
Worthy is the lamb
Who can compare with You
Who can surpass Your greatness
You alone deserve all the praises from our hearts

We Surrender All

With our unanswered questions
We surrender
With things that surpassed our understanding
We yield
For our trust is in our good and loving Father
So full of love and compassion
To Him we surrender all
For He keeps our beating hearts pumping
Yet for another day to see Him
In His glory and His grace

Our Redeemer
Our mighty fortress

We Cannot Live Without Him

Our time alone with the Lord each morning is not merely a time of centering our hearts upon the Lord. It is an act of love and devotion.

We cannot live without Him. Without seeking the face of the Lord, we are incapable to move into the day. In Him we live and move and have our being.

He is the reason why we rise with hope and strength each day. He is the reason why we sing. He is our life and inspiration.

God works through our vulnerability and frailty. He brings wholeness, restoration and hope. As we surrender the broken pieces of my lives to Him, He makes all things beautiful.

There is nothing more important than pouring and abandoning my life into His hands. He gives me beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning. He gives us undying hope.

We rise with expectancy and great joy each day. Thank God for another day to taste His goodness and His grace.

My Late Father

Cancer took away my late father last September. He died at the age of 75. Last August, my family and I were devastated when we knew that his cancer had spread from his liver to many parts of his body. The doctor gave him six to nine months to live but he only lasted for a month. I witnessed the most heart wrenching and painful experience seeing the disease eating away his life as he laid on his bed. Monte and I were thankful that he allowed us to pray with him on several occasions.
A pastor friend got one his Hainanese pastor called Pastor Foo to visit my father. My father was so open to the good news. He was so sick and weak and yet he kept asking Pastor Foo to tell him more. He could have sat up in the living room sofa for about an hour and that was amazing considering his physical state. Pastor Foo asked if he wanted to accept Christ, my father nodded his head. While all this was happening, my aunt and her daughter came by to visit and they proceeded to speak to my mother in the kitchen. My father was hungry for the message and the word and he did not excuse himself to entertain my relatives. The presence of God had held him there that afternoon. I witnessed a miracle that I will never ever forget.
My father was a good man. He was a sailor in his younger days. Later on, he ran an officer's mess at a bank for many years. He sold beverages, sandwiches and meals to the bank staff and officers. He proceeded to drive a taxi when he had to give up the officer's mess business. He drove the taxi for many years thereafter. He was happier because he loved interacting with the passengers.
My father was a great father. He loved my two brothers and I so much. He worked hard, sacrificed and gave the best to us. Though we were not rich, we never had any lack. I can still remember the smell and taste of cranberry juice, banana milk, garlic pills and Dutch chocolate milk when I was young. I even had tuition classes when it was not the norm in the early days. One day, my father asked if I wanted to learn the piano. I regret not taking up his offer then. That was my father, he never stopped giving. That was how he showed he loved my mother, my brothers and me.
My mother is not physically strong and healthy. My father helped with household chores, he did the marketing. He even bought my mother's clothing.
My father left a great legacy. He gave and he led by example. I am a recipient of his sacrificial love. Last month, my younger brother, Edwin, blessed us with a new fan as the old one broke down sometime ago. Not long ago, he also sent the plumber to settle my faulty flushing system in both my bathrooms. In September, my older brother, Nicholas, bought us a TV. The amazing thing is that he did not know that our old TV was on the verge of breaking down. We thank God for loving family members who care and share. I know that my late father had taught us well.
When Monte and I were courting, we had an uphill challenge. My father asked if I could marry a Chinese man instead. God is so good. To cut the long story short, my father gave his blessing for us to marry. He not only accepted Monte as a son-in-law, He loved and cared for him like his own son. He blessed us beyond our imagination.
As I share about my late father, my heart wells up with much appreciation and gratitude because God had blessed me with a wonderful father. He left us a great legacy. A legacy of love and sacrifice.

Eternity in our Hearts

You put eternity in our hearts
We radiate with Your joy

You put eternity in our hearts
We find comfort and hope in You

You put eternity in our hearts
We embrace Your purposes

In You We live
And move
And have our being in You
You put eternity in our hearts

We cry out to You our maker
Our Redeemer
Our Saviour
Our only hope

Thank you, Lord
For putting eternity in our hearts

Clinging on to the Lord

Yesterday, Monte and I were at the Singapore General Hospital to have Monte's cast removed. Wearing the cast since 21 Apr is not a small feat.  Through this situation, we experience the grace and mercy of God in a deeper dimension.  His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
Lamenting and asking why this had to happen is not the point, the most important thing is seeing and experiencing the Lord in whatever circumstance or predicament we may find ourselves in. We know our vulnerability but we also know that God is our help in times of need.  He comes through for us when we cling to Him and cry out for His divine intervention.  We learn to lean on Him and allow Him to carry us through the rocky mountains and the raging sea.  We can only declare that He is faithful till the very end.

Humble Neha

The Strait's Times yesterday featured Neha Ramu from London who scored the maximum 162 in a test for Mensa, the world's oldest high-IQ society. Her IQ surpassed Professor Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and even Albert Einstein. Her modest reaction is amazing. She said: "Stephen Hawing, Albert Einstein, they've achieved so much... It's not right to compare me to them just because of my IQ. If I don't put in my effort and make use of my IQ, then there's no point in having it."

Not surprisingly, her parents, British eye specialists Jayashree and Muniraju Ramu were also extremely low-key. They did not blow the horn or any trumpet to publicize Nehu's amazing achievement although they were happy. It was reported that "they didn't celebrate with a party or a series of loud, joyous phone calls to everyone in the family's contact list."

I believe Neha will go very far in life because she has good attitudes and values. True humility is never self serving. It will not be eager to outshine or flaunt its strength and ability. When we walk in humility, we not only grow and develop internally, others will also partake of our success and achievement. Humility opens doors for us to be an impact and influence to touch lives.

The Lord's Drawing

The time we spent looking out at the beautiful sea last Thursday night was simply magical. The sound of the sweeping waves soothed us. The gentle and refreshing breeze nourished us. We soaked in every minute of our time as we laid on the beach. We gazed in the beautiful night sky doing nothing but allowing God's amazing creation to sweep us away.

Gratitude

Lovely Eliska
Adorable Eliska
Mum and Eliska

God is so good to us.  The lyrics of a song came to me this morning.

I WAS MADE TO PRAISE YOU

I was made to praise You
I was made to glorify Your Name
In every circumstance to find a
Chance to thank You
I was made to love You
I was made to worship at Your feet
And to obey You Lord
I was made for You

I will always praise You
I will always glorify Your Name
In every circumstance I’ll find a
Chance to thank You
I will always love You
I will always worship at Your feet
And I’ll obey You Lord
I was made for You
We love the Lord and we will find every circumstance to thank Him.  Our breath, our life, our energy and everything we possess come from our maker, sustainer and redeemer.

One of the things that I thank God for is Eliska.  My elder brother is single, Monte and I are childless.  My brother, Edwin and his wife, Soko, had Eliska on 9 Nov 2011.  She is our link to the generation.  When Eliska came into this world, my late father and mother were in their 70's.  They were elated to see their precious granddaughter.  We are full of gratitude for the abundant blessing to our family.  God is so good.

Transformational Leadership

"When you make others successful, you become all the more successful yourself. It means you have the ability to bring the best out in people and that leadership trait is very well-prized."

Vincent Chin of Boston Consulting Group chief, June 2, 2013, The Strait's Times

Foot Washing Touches Hearts

The Chinese evening paper Lian He Wan Bao on 3rd June 2013 featured a heart-warming event which happened on 2nd June. 1500 people in Singapore participated in a Parent's day foot washing event in Singapore. I believe there was not a dry eye when children washed their parent's feet as a sign of love and filial piety.

Persevering Love

We journey through life and savour the bitter and the sweet, the highs and the lows, the exhilarating and the mundane but one thing that sets someone apart is a person who leans on the arms of God moment by moment. We are incapable to bear everything and the Lord pours His grace on us. The pain and struggles seem unbearable at times but the Lord never forsakes us. He leads us through every step. He has gone though pain and He tells us that He carries us through our dark days and moments.

When we posture our hearts, soul, mind on our loving God, His perspectives and wisdom clear our clouded vision, and gives us direction. He gives us purpose to continue the journey. How can we ever live without Him? No, not a second, the only reason why our hearts are beating is because of His great mercy and grace. When we entrust our whole life to our Redeemer, He makes all things beautiful. He picks up the broken pieces and brings us life and wholeness. Those who persevere to the end will receive the crown of life.

The Balm of Gilead

In mid March 2013, I discovered a lump at the base of my neck near the collar bone. It was hard and it did not look good.

I went to the doctor and the ultrasound showed a nodule measuring about 2 cm in diameter. In the meantime, blood tests were done and I was scheduled to see the specialist in the Singapore General Hospital at a later date.

It was tough for me because of the heavy use of my voice in vocal and enrichment training. At times, I had difficulty projecting my voice. When I yawn, it was hurting too.

I had difficulty singing and praying. Oftensomes, Monte had to be ready to take over in the middle of prayer. God is merciful.

Monte and I continued to pray for the Lord's healing and grace.

One day, I discovered to my amazement that the lump was gone. Monte and I were elated. We cannot understand why and where it had gone.

All we know was that God had come through for us. The Lord healed me. Jesus is the balm of Gilead.

God performs mighty miracles. His healing power flows through our broken bodies. The balm of Gilead cruises through our broken bodies.

Lord, have mercy on us! Empower and strengthen us to believe You for a miracle. The Lord inspires faith in our hearts to see the miraculous.

Stranger's Kindness

On 21 April, Monte and I were traveling on a travelator on our way into Sentosa.  Monte fell and had a hairline fracture of his right knee.  The doctor at Singapore General Hospital said that it might take 10-12 weeks to heal.  He had to wear a cast from his upper thigh to his ankle.

Today, he is still wearing a cast.  It will be removed on 10 June 2013.  During this time, we are thankful to experience the kindness of people.  Total strangers help in different ways.  People extend their helping hands.  Their warmth, kindness and generosity touched us deeply.

We Extol Your Matchless Name

There is a lovely blue tinge in the sky this morning. It is mesmerising. It is a glorious sight to behold.

The Lord fills our hearts, minds and soul with His greatness and wonder. The indescribable beauty is magnified when we behold the Lord. His splendour and glory flood our hearts. The bigness, vastness and greatness of our loving God envelop us.

The Lord brings clarity and perspective to our lives and circumstances. He brings us inspiring hope. He brings joy and restoration. He fills our mouths with laughter.

We need Him more with each passing moment. We bow down in humble adoration and extol His matchless name. Show us Your glory. Show us Your power. We worship You almighty God.

Bringing the Plants Back to Life

Over time, Monte picked up some discarded plants in our neighbourhood.  Most  of the plants were in a terrible state when he first brought them home.  With some tender loving care, they come alive to add some colours to our life.

How Great is Our God

Tonight, my heart is so full with the goodness of the Lord. Monte's participation in the Society of Pentecostal Studies conference last year in Virginia, USA and this year at Seattle, USA is testament to the divine providence of God. The Lord opened the door of Ministry but we lack the funds for Monte to go. God miraculously provided the needed finances to show us that He has all the resources in His hands.

Monte went and came back to Singapore full of the things that God had placed in His heart and Spirit. The work of God in us cannot be purchased by money. It is not the earthly success that the world thinks of. It is the work of God's Spirit. It is the work of His power.  It is so precious and priceless because God gives His best to us.

All we can say is that we can never ever out do and out give Him. He stretches our faith to believe for the impossible. We are mindful of the smallness of our strength, our limitations and inadequacies. But the Lord overlooks all these. He zeroes into the depth of our being and shows us His heart. He unfolds His plans and purposes to us when we seek His face.  He opened our eyes to see that all things are possible for Him.

Our 14th Wedding Anniversary

Today marks the 14th year of our marriage.  I thank God for these years that He has led us through a wonderful journey filled with His grace, strength, hope, joy, peace and countless blessings which God has freely lavished on us. We stand amazed at His greatness and goodness.  He opened our eyes to see miracles and our hearts leap with joy when we see Him in His glory, splendour and grace.

I thank God for Monte who has given me the best years of my life.  We are reminded that it is God who put two different persons with different upbringing, character, values, personality together.  It is not because we are a perfect match for each other.  The only reason two hearts melted into one is because of the Lord's love and presence in us.  He gels us together.  He cements us together.  He super-glued us together with His great love.

We are thankful for each day that God has blessed us.  We seize every moment to experience the greatness, boundlessness and bigness of our loving God who is faithful and true.  We allow the Lord to do a deep and lasting work in our life in Him.  In Christ alone, we put our trust.

Amazing God

Monte posted the following posted the early hours today:

"Brothers and sisters, I am at the airport now and will fly off to the USA for about ten days. First stop is Seattle WA where later in the week I will attend the Society for Pentecostal Studies meeting to deliver a paper on, in layman terms, spiritual and life formation.

My thanks especially to a number of Beloved friends in Christ who provided in my behalf to make this trip possible. To both you and many others who remember me in prayer, again, your treasured prayer for God's angelic oversight is appreciated during this trip. I will keep you informed (Phil. 4:10-13, 19, 23).

Remember my dearest wife Jee Fong Tan-Rice, of whom I will be separate from during our wedding anniversary (20 March). My family will fly me down to Fresno, California to visit them for a few days, and then I will return to Seattle for the flight back to Singapore on 29 March."

As I read what Monte had posted, my heart well up with gratitude to the Lord. He opened the door for Monte to present the paper at the SPS conference and provided the resources to meet every need. Monte and I have experienced the Lord in an awesome dimension that we have never imagine. The Lord is truly awesome and glorious. Our limited vocabulary is insufficient to express our deep appreciation to His work in us. We give thanks to the people who have given financially and prayed for us in this endeavour. We continue to posture our hearts to our loving God and Father who is faithful, wonderful and mighty. God is good all the time.

Gratefulness

Monte and I are thankful for family and friends who have been a part of our lives. Often when we dwell on how people have blessed and enriched us, we can only thank God for this blessing. We desire these relationships to deepen and grow stronger.

We are mindful of the smallness of our strength. We know our vulnerability. But we also know in our hearts that God is sovereign and great. We lack nothing and we put our complete trust in our God who never fails. Our hearts overflow with gratefulness as we live each day in the light of His glory and grace.

Amazing Mickey

My brother's dog, Mickey, is putting up with us for a few years.  Monte and I love him a lot.  He loves to sleep on the mat on my bedroom floor.  A few hours before bedtime, he would already position himself.  He moves the mat as close to our bed as he can.  He's just adorable.

Capturing Precious Moments

20 Oct 2012 at 8.43am
In the stillness of the morning on 20 Oct last year, I looked out of my window and captured these precious moments. Moments filled with the awesomeness and greatness of our loving God and Father.  I was captivated by God's amazing creation. The heaven and earth declares the glory of the Lord.  In the quietness of that lovely morning, the world seemed to stand still.  My heart flooded with serenity, peace and calmness that one can only find in the presence of God.

Happy Birthday, Monte!

Today is Monte’s birthday.  I am blessed to journey with Monte all these years.  He has been a constant encourager and inspiring husband.  His love and sacrifice has touched me deeply.  I cherish each day that we can journey through life’s sweet and bitter moments, highs and lows, joy and sorrow, hope and despair.  It is a blessing to hold someone’s hand when you know that special someone loves the Lord with all of his heart.  You know that he will do everything he can to follow hard after the heart of God in the most trying circumstances.  I love you, Monte.  Happy birthday!
